spinTouch’s Rapid Rise to Fame

spinTouch opened its doors many years ago to help fill the gaps in digital signage technology. Just as we do today, we started with a vision of bringing our clients’ ideas to life and worked tirelessly to develop the tools and solutions that would enable creativity and connectivity to thrive. spinTouch is still upholding its original mission and vision, but the pandemic presented new opportunities to push the envelope even further. 

Much of our growth in the last two years that has earned us recognition from the Inc 5000 organization is due to our dedication to the user experience. We’ve made it our mantra to deliver UX in every sense of the word, which is why we developed the spinTouch RapidScreen. The critical effects of the pandemic showed us a need to bring UX into new safety protocols and procedures as businesses raced against the clock to reopen safely. UX was a necessary component of reopening, but it wasn’t one that businesses had the time to develop nor the resources to create. So we did it for them. Our temperature screening kiosk combined our past years of UX design with modern technology to give businesses ready-made solutions for public safety. 

It wasn’t the only piece of our rapid growth period, but it did play a large role in helping to solidify our reputation as a leader in digital technology and UX engineers. And we’re building on those successes, lessons, and experiences every day. 

What’s Next for spinTouch?

So far, 2021 has been a busy one for spinTouch. In addition to the Inc 5000, we’ve also earned the stamp of approval as a DesignRush Accredited Agency 2021. This accreditation places us amongst some of the most prestigious agencies in marketing and technology and reflects the high standards of excellence by which we operate.

For those who might not know, the digital signage industry as a whole is growing rapidly year over year.  Markets and Markets reports that the industry is projected to Reach USD 27.34 billion by 2022. North America is expected to hold the largest market share while dominating the digital signage industry between 2016 and 2022. Some of the major players in the digital signage market include Samsung Electronics, LG display, Sharp Corporation, Panasonic Corp. With major household names like these driving innovation, it is no wonder why the technology and wow factor is growing exponentially year after year.

A big year for interactive

No matter which direction you walked you were sure to come across interactive digital signage. Just about every surface you can imagine possible was made interactive. This included interactive touch driven kiosks, projection based interactive floors, ginormous 4K multi-user video walls, and even fully interactive 3D holograms.

It was obvious that both hardware manufacturers and interactive software developers are getting out ahead of consumer interest.  Audiences are becoming much more immune to passive digital signage. Consumers have much higher expectations for “immersive experience” and interactive digital signage is a more effective way to engage and captivate the minds of users. The ability to be in full control of the digital experience in front of you helps increase engagement and dwell time. This is helping brands driving messaging and various initiatives on a whole new level.

The latest interactive touch screen display solutions

There were two interactive digital signage hardware manufacturers, in particular, this year that were pushing the envelope and rolling out innovative technology unlike any other. At the Elo Touch Solutions booth, they showcased their 10-point touch IDS interactive video wall solution. The video wall shown below is powered by three 55 inch 4K multi-touch display screens, brought together in a 1×3 video wall array creating a whopping 3 by 4K resolution. Content creators now have a canvas unlike any other to showcase the most powerful high-resolution content without any limitations on the hardware side.

Next up was UK based touch technology manufacturer Zytronic who presented their patented and award winning projected capacitive technology (PCT™ and MPCT™) touchscreens. This year Zytronics was showcasing their new Force Sensing Technology, which is very similar to our iPhone force touch features. What is amazing about this technology is that when combined with the right software you are able to create an unparalleled multi-touch experience for your audience. The degree of force that one uses with an interactive touch display will trigger various levels of engagement.

For example, if you’re looking at a map, the more forceful touch will allow you to zoom in on the location rather than having to use multiple touch points to pinch and zoom through deeper levels of content. This allows applications with a well-developed user interface to be able to shorten the time it takes for a user to navigate to the content they are interested in, ultimately providing a better overall interactive experience.

While we’re still on the topic of hardware let’s not forget about one of the most overlooked and underrated aspects of an interactive digital signage setup – the mounting solution. This year Premier Mounts out of Fullerton California showcased a wide range of displaying mounting hardware that offers much more customization and extensibility for interactive video wall installations than any off the shelf mount manufacturer could offer.  Oh and, Happy 40th Anniversary to Premier Mounts whose digital signage systems you have probably seen set up at various Macy’s, Chase banks, and Las Vegas’ own MGM Grand Hotel.

Interactive Digital Signage Software

I think it goes without saying that digital signage hardware is only as good as the software driving it. However, with interactive digital signage software, all things were not created equal. A few years ago, if you walked the DSE floor you probably saw most multi touch monitors simply running Microsoft Paint or perhaps a picture collage app of some sort. A year or two later you might have seen custom software applications popping up that resembled an interactive website, but they still didn’t have the same app UI/UX that you are used to using on your smartphones and tablet devices.

At DSE 2017, content and interactive software continued to evolve. Applications like myShowcase™ Interactive Presentation Software raised the bar both on the integrator and user side of things. Now, if you’re sitting by a window, a quick peek outside will confirm that we have yet to see flying cars and kids riding hoverboards. To date, several companies, including Lexus have fallen short in their efforts to bring us a real, functional hoverboard.

Hollywood has a history of prophesying technological advances of the future, and in some instances they get it right. Michael Bay, the man behind multiple blockbusters, showcased one such “future” technology in The Island, a 2005 movie starring Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor. In one of the scenes in which McGregor’s character, Lincoln Echo Six visits Dr. Merrick’s office; the two are seen conducting their meeting across a multi-touch interactive table.

At the time, most conversations around multi-touch tables were either conceptual (and triggered by a movie scene) or heard in labs and among researchers and tech geeks. Although a few companies boasted their (early) advances, the average consumer would not interact with this technology until years later.

The past decade has ushered many design and engineering firms into this space; competition has been fierce, and with new emerging technologies, we find ourselves in truly exciting times for our industry.

In 2009, spinTouch began its R&D around the design and development of our very own multi-touch, interactive table. We had already succeeded in bringing the concept to life through several custom projects, yet we wanted to step up our game and introduce the ultimate Plug & Play solution. On the contrary we believe that 4k is a nascent technology that could serve tremendous value if one were to focus on a proper method of content delivery. Fortunately for us we came across a very forward thinking client that asked us to push the boundaries of interactive technology and to help them build out a one of a kind experience at their innovation center. We knew this would be a perfect time to introduce 4k content into the mix of our interactive experience building.

Our task was to create an immersive experience for guests where they would virtually tour a manufacturing facility that was well over a thousand miles away from their innovation center. This interactive experience would need to convey that the highest level of manufacturing standards were being met at our client’s plant.

Our digital engagements team thought outside of the box and conceived a powerful way of combining voice recognition, body tracking by Kinect®, and 4K video content to create this experience. This was the creation of truWindow™, the first ever virtual window experience that leveraged 4k video content on two portrait mounted 1920×1080 LCD’s.  As a user approaches the two wall mounted LCD panels they are tracked by a Kinect® camera and through truWindow™ facial and body recognition algorithms, 4k video content then adapts in respect to the users viewing angle. Since the 4K video content exceeds the parameters of a traditional HD display without any scaling, a user is able look through this “virtual window” and see the manufacturing facility at all different angles. By integrating voice command and simple arm signals, users can navigate across various areas of the manufacturing facility.

In most cases interactive applications lack in this department because the application seems to only have passive/non-interactive content, or the content is just flat out uninviting. Engage – After you have captivated the attention of your passerby and they are now ready to interact with your content, this is your opportunity to get them fully engaged and immersed in the messaging your application is delivering. Applications that do a great job of engaging users do so by making sure they continue to provide relevant content to users. They also obsess over incorporating authentic motion into the user interface. This means developing an intuitive layout, style, and animations into the application to enhance usability.

Inspire – The last part of this formula comes as a result of properly delivering on the first two. When a user enjoys interacting with your application and overall messaging, they become inspired to take action. If you have created an interactive retail application this action can be to purchase a product, or if you have created a marketing application their action can be to share this experience via social media and becoming advocated for your brand. When your user is inspired we call that a “win-win”, where both the person engaging with the content and the company behind the experience benefits.

So maybe it isn’t such a mystery why some interactive applications offer such a greater experience than others. The creators of these applications did their homework on their target audience and built on the three key interactive application fundamentals to attract, engage, and inspire. In most cases this means taking the interactive experience building process and turning it on its head and putting the creative elements first before focusing the hardware and pro a/v ins and outs.
